So today, as I was lying on the grass in the backyard, talking to a certain someone and marvelling at the cloudless sky, I had a thought....and for all those who were about to ask...no, it didn't hurt...
Maybe it was the after effects of sun exposure, or maybe this is my quarter-life crisis just beginning to rear its ugly head but nevertheless, I still think it's one of the best thoughts that has entered my little head in recent days...
Anyway to get to the point, my thought was this:
How freaking awesome is it just to lie in the grass or roll down a hill and not give a crap about who sees you do it or how much damage you've done to your brand new $200 jeans....
And then I thought, whatever happened to the crazy stuff you do as a kid - sliding down icy hills seated on your winter jacket; hanging upside down on the monkey bars until all the blood rushes to your head and you get dizzy; or making cubby houses with the most random objects you can find lying around your house; playing sardines, and hide and seek; and climbing trees; and making prank calls to unsuspecting people; running under the sprinkler on hot summer days; and finding the biggest, steepest, scariest looking hill then sitting yourself down on your brother's skateboard and letting it fly, not even thinking about the dangers of the cars passing below; or grabbing an umbrella and launching yourself off the front verandah in the hopes that you could fly just like Mary Poppins did (maybe that one was just me hahaha)...
Why is it that once you get past a certain age this fun seems to drop away...is it because of that "I'm a teenager now, I'm so grown up and done with acting like a child because that's sooo not cool" mentality?...is it because nobody finds the time in their oh-so-busy lives...or more accurately nobody takes the time out to do all the crazy stuff they used to?...or is it because, as adults we forget how to really have fun?
There's something so great about how easily amused you can be as a child...and for me, this is still the case...small things, small minds I guess but seriously, what is life about if you can't have a little fun? Again maybe this is just a symptom of a quarter-life crisis but I miss the days when life was a game and your biggest worry was colouring outside the lines or what you could swap your sandwich for when lunchtime came around or who got to start of as "it" in the daily game of tag...
So, in honour of all the random means of having fun that we all used as kids, I've decided there should be a day devoted to this kind of thing...
From this day on (if it hasn't already been done, if it has..screw it, my day is better!) the 30th January is the International Day of Random Crazy Fun, where everyone takes time out from their normal, boring lives not only to remember what it's like to have fun and enjoy the simpler side of life but to actually let loose for a day and kick up their heels without a care in the world...
So forget about work - dig up your crayons, put on your tree-climbing shoes, kick your legs to fly as high as you can on the swingset, lie in the grass and find pictures in the clouds...do whatever the hell you feel like...but most importantly...have a monumentally entertaining day!!
